Ceramic crowns with a zirconia base have become quite popular over the last few years and are competing well with the traditional ceramic to metal crowns. The zirconia base comes in a variety of colors that resemble the tooth allowing us to preserve the natural look of teeth. Zirconia is a biocompatible materiel, meaning it does not harm or stimulate the gums. Further more zirconia crowns are produced digitally in comparison to metal-ceramic crowns which are produced manually. Thus allowing a greater fit to be achieved with a zirconia crown. This reduces the likeliness of future caries to develop underneath the crown, or for gingival inflammation to occur around the crowns.
Noam’s frontal teeth were injured during his military service. The injured teeth were restored at a different clinic. During the years the restorations fell a few times. This has left Noam quite embarrassed over the years with broken teeth as can be seen in picture 1. In addition, the root was damaged, so the tooth became sensitive to cold temperatures. After root canal treatment, the damaged teeth were prepared to receive the crowns( picture 2), simultaneously we made sure to create temporary crowns( picture 3). After gum healing, the temporaries were replaced with porcelain fused to zirconia crowns that fitted well in the oral cavity. End treatment results can be viewed on pictures 4,5 and 6. Notice the similarity between the porcelain of the crowns and the natural look of the enamel on the other teeth. This is the art work of the dental technician.
